In September 2008 assembled a motley group of people from all around world in Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche’s shrine room for a welcome reception. We had all made the excellent decision to come to Nepal to do the BA in Buddhist studies here at RYI. Although we did not know each other I sensed at that time a certain spirit of companionship in the room that would increase over the coming months and years. 

 More than five years later a good number of those people came together for a joyful reunion in the restaurant 'Flavors' (now moved to a different place and prices more than tripled). We talked about the good old times that have changed into good new times and we drank a lot of hot water against the cold.

 Mark your calendar for our 10-year anniversary in November 2018 to celebrate at Boudhanath!

Pharping Azura Cave Monastery Every year Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche leads several seminars and retreats in Asura Cave monastery in Pharping. Many of us have heard that Asura Cave is a very special, yet we are often a bit unsure what exactly happened there and why it is so special. Thus I wanted to share with you, what I have found out so far.  Pharping: Pharping is a small but expanding village about 16 km southwest of Kathmandu, on a hillside above the main valley. Pharping (pronounced "Farping" by the Nepalis) is known to the Tibetans as Yangleshö and also sometimes as Phamting, as some say it is the birthplace of the Phamtingpa, the heart-­‐son of Naropa. Chatral Rinpoche explains that the 'Indian Phamting' (Tib. rgya gar pham thing ) derives its name from the presence of the great hood of the Naga king Lhakmachen or Shesha, which marks it as a site of his power. Pilgrimage trip to Sankhu

This year (2017), on September, RYI Students along with the Staffs went to  Sankhu for pilgrimage trip. It was an amazing experience for all of us. Sankhu is  an ancient Newar town located in the North-Eastern corner of Kathmandu valley. Sankhu was once an important stop on the old trade route from Kathmandu to  Lhasa (Tibet), but this historic settlement was severely damaged by the  2015 earthquake, so it is under renovation process. The temple of Vajrayogini is one of identity of Sankhu. It is situated on the middle of hill. The goddesses are  worshiped with high beliefs, by both Hindu and Buddhist. This place is also known as the Eighty Siddhas as there are four caves where the  Siddhas of India are said to have stayed. The oldest inscription found in Sankhu is  dated 538 AD. Field Trip to Swayambhunath Temple

            On a Saturday morning, the ten or so of us who were able to brave the February cold got on the bus and reached Swayambhunath promptly. Just after entering we encircled Father Greg who was our gracious guide and listened to him talk about the history of Swayambhunath Temple and its importance in Newari Buddhism. Swayambhupuraṇa is the Sanskrit text in which is written the story of the origin of Swayambhunath Temple. Swayambhupuraṇa is unique; it is the only puraṇa text associated with Buddhism. The rest of the puraṇa texts concern Hindu gods. The story goes: Where the Kathmandu valley is today, there used to be a lake filled with Nagas (snakes). In this lake, a Buddha called Bipaswi Tathāgata planted a lotus with one thousand petals. This lotus flower emanated a bright light signifying the Buddha nature.
