Unpretentious advice to new students

As a result of my short but fruitful experience in the first year of the BA program, I thought it could be worthwhile to give some unpretentious advice that might be of benefit for any student of the Shedra; even though they are destined especially to the new comer students. If you are one of these fortunate people, welcome to RYI. I hope these lines are helpful to you.

First of all, don’t lose your heart. Probably you have already heard about the great amount of energy that studying in a reputed place like RYI demands: memorizing scores of words a week, writing multitude of papers, studying complex topics of philosophy, and so on. In first place, you must be confident that such goal is completely attainable for anyone.
However, since probably you will need to strive and this endeavour might not be a piece of cake, be ready to push yourself. If you try to do things well, perhaps you will reach the point where you will feel at least slightly overwhelmed by the work you have to do. At that point, consider some fact which alleviates this burden. For example, keep in mind that each semester lasts only four months so during that short period of time you must try to do your best.

However, while you are struggling for accomplishing your goal, be careful not to reach the point of getting over burned. This is especially critical at the end of each semester, when the magnitude of work that one has done is already considerable. In order to do so, try to leave certain space between you and your studies. For instance, practice some sport regularly, do some volunteering task, or just take one weekend every month to escape from the dusty and oppressive Kathmandu. Also meditate.

If you experience a slump, check the motivation you had for joining the Shedra. If one day you decided to start a new vital period in Nepal while leaving in the West your beloved ones and most of your adored belongings, I am sure that behind there must be an exceptionally powerful reason. Bring it to mind again and again. This will give you fortitude against the hindrances.

 And to end with, appreciate and cherish the wonderful opportunity you got to study in this place. If you make the right effort, you will be rewarded with increase. Discover a gorgeous country, encounter stimulating people, and enjoy a marvellous experience. Welcome to RYI.
